I am a Scottish artist living and working in the South of France.
While my early training was in business and languages I have studied art mainly in Provence and at the Glasgow School of Art.
My positive use of shape and colour owes much to my travels and studies in Scotland, France and Italy.
INSPIRATION
I have always been fascinated by shape and colour - particularly strong, positive shapes and blocks of colour. This is easily visible in most of my paintings. I sometimes tend to simplify shapes to the point of their becoming architectural in form.
As inspiration in my landscapes, I use the wonders of nature, sometimes very figuratively and sometimes in an abstract or semi-abstract way. I find trees and rocky ground particularly stimulating though all unusual elements in nature attract my interest. I seek to find a harmony in all that I paint.
My still life paintings tend to be more figurative though the principles of shape and colour are still evident.
I paint in oils, acrylics and pastels. My oil paintings are mostly figurative though tending recently toward the semi-abstract. My pastels again are mainly figurative though elements of the semi-abstract are easily discernible. My acrylics to-date are often abstract though still based on scenes from nature.
